Minister Humphreys announces the appointment of new Secretary General at the Department of Rural and Community Development

 

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has announced the appointment of Mary Hurley as the new Secretary General at the Department of Rural and Community Development.

A graduate of University College Dublin (UCD), Ms Hurley previously served as an Assistant Secretary at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage prior to her promotion.

She has held the responsibility for policy areas such as local government, fire and emergency management, homelessness, regeneration, community and rural development.

Over the course of her career, Ms Hurley has also worked across a number of Departments, including the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, where she played a key role in the 1916 commemorations.

Ms Hurley was appointed to the positon of Secretary General following an open competition run by the Public Appointments Service and the Top Level Appointments Committee (TLAC).

Welcoming the appointment, Minister Humphreys said:

“I am delighted to welcome Mary on board as Secretary General and I am looking forward to working with her in revitalising Rural Ireland and making our communities better places to live, work and raise a family.

“Mary has gained a wealth of experience across the public service and I have no doubt she will make a significant contribution to her role as Secretary General.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sheenagh Rooney for her excellent service over recent months in the position of Acting Secretary General.”
